Burundi’s Accession to OHADA: A Major Step Toward the Modernization of Business Law

Bujumbura – Burundi’s accession to the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA) represents a major step forward in strengthening legal certainty, improving the business climate, and attracting both domestic and foreign investment.

In this context, an international symposium entitled “Burundi and the Harmonization of Business Law: Challenges and Prospects of OHADA Law and Community Laws in Africa” brought together national and international experts, academics, judges, lawyers, private sector representatives, and public officials for three days of discussions on the opportunities and challenges related to Burundi’s integration into the OHADA legal framework.

The opening ceremony featured welcoming remarks by the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Professor Guy BUCUMI, followed by a message from the Permanent Secretary of OHADA, Professor Mayatta Ndiaye Mbaye. Participants also listened attentively to the address delivered by His Excellency Alfred AHINGEJEJE, Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Gender, who emphasized the strategic importance of harmonizing business law for Burundi’s economic development. The discussions highlighted the central role of OHADA in modernizing African legal systems. Speakers stressed the benefits of adopting harmonized business regulations, including reducing legal risks, strengthening investor confidence, and facilitating trade at both regional and continental levels. Experts also pointed out that Burundi’s integration into the OHADA framework could enhance the competitiveness of Burundian businesses, promote entrepreneurship, and create a more favorable environment for productive investment.

Among the participants was Mr. Gervais KWIZERA, Managing Director of TRADE SPHERE INVESTMENT COMPANY (SPRL), who actively participated in the various sessions and discussions. During the discussions, participants emphasized that legal certainty and predictable commercial regulations are essential factors in encouraging investment, developing economic partnerships, and strengthening Burundi’s integration into regional and African value chains.

At the conclusion of the three-day event, participants reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the reforms necessary for Burundi to fully benefit from OHADA mechanisms. The symposium served as an important platform for dialogue and the exchange of experiences on the opportunities offered by business law harmonization for the country’s sustainable economic development.

The event demonstrated that OHADA remains a strategic tool for promoting sound economic governance, strengthening investor confidence, and accelerating Burundi’s economic integration within Africa.
